The philosophy of Osteopathic Medicine is not much different than that of Physiatry or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Osteopathy aims to treat the patient as mind, body and spirit. Rather than focus on disease, Osteopathy looks at the musculoskeletal system and how it can predispose a patient to the diseased condition.
Osteopaths are not only able to diagnose musculoskeletal abnormalities through palpation, but also treat them using Osteopathic Manual Treatments (OMT).
OMT is a set of skills unique to the osteopathic medical training process that combine traditional massage and skeletal adjustments that pre-date chiropractors. These techniques are used to rebalance the muscular, skeletal, neurological and visceral systems.
While studying Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Dr. Soto clocked well over a hundred hours of extra-curricular seminar time learning Osteopathic techniques. Recognizing the value of Osteopathic Manual Techniques, he extensively studied a variety of Osteopathic principles including Cranial Osteopathy, Jones Counterstrain, HVLA, Myofascial Release, Ligamentous Articular Strain, Soft Tissue and Functional Positional Release.
